Despite more freedom under the next phase of the pandemic recovery, Premier Blaine Higgs says provincial borders will remain closed except for essential travel.
An analysis is underway to understand how much is new traffic and how much is routine traffic.
Higgs was asked Monday if he was concerned about a possible constitutional challenge of the border restrictions.
“That is the right they have. We will defend the right we have to protect public health. Because we feel an obligation and a necessity to do so,” he notes.
After the Mother’s Day weekend with looser restrictions, Higgs admits he’s concerned about crowds and public health guidelines not being followed.
Higgs has also reached out to the prime minister to talk about federal infrastructure funding during the pandemic.
He hopes Ottawa can be more flexible in funding New Brunswick’s needs.
Meantime, the province continues to encourage New Brunswickers to apply for jobs in the seafood industry which had been filled by temporary foreign workers.
As of Monday, more than 500 positions have been posted online and 367 job seekers have applied for those jobs.
