VIA Rail has announced that passenger service in the Maritimes will be suspended until at least November.
The Ocean which stops in Moncton between Montreal and Halifax had already halted service due to the pandemic.
VIA’s western train The Canadian between Toronto and Vancouver is also suspended.
The rail company says passengers with reservations will be contacted and reimbursed.
“This was not an easy decision to make but, given the current circumstances, the health and safety of our passengers, crew members and local communities must come first. As the travel industry grapples with the effects of COVID-19, we will use this extended pause to assess and identify which measures to implement in order to get back on track as soon and as safely as possible,” said Cynthia Garneau, VIA Rail President and CEO.
VIA Rail will be using the suspension period to focus on inspection and repair work.
