Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says Canada is immediately banning 1,500 models and variants of assault style firearms.
Trudeau says these types of guns were designed for one thing: to kill the largest amount of people in the shortest period of time adding there is no place or use for these types of firearms in Canada.
“For many families including many Indigenous people firearms are a part of traditions passed down through traditions, and the vast majority of gun owners use them safely and responsibly whether it be for work, sport shooting or for hunting, but you don’t need an AR-15 to bring down a deer. So effective immediately, it is no longer permitted to buy, sell, transport, import or use military grade assault weapons in this country,” Trudeau said.
Trudeau notes they will legislate fair compensation for gun owners.
A Criminal Code amnesty is in place until April 30, 2022, to protect lawful owners from criminal liability and to enable them to comply with the law. Under the amnesty, the newly prohibited firearms can only be transferred or transported within Canada for specific purposes.
These models represent nine categories of firearms and two types identified by characteristic. Some of their components are also prohibited.
The newly prohibited firearms and components cannot be legally used, sold, or imported. Owners must also continue to safely store them, and may only transfer and transport them under limited circumstances.
