There is a new person in charge of emergency medicine for the Horizon Health Network in the Saint John area.
Dr. Paul Atkinson will assume the role of medical director of emergency medicine as of July 15.
The position has been held by Dr. Michael Howlett for the past 10 years.
“With his extensive experience in Emergency Medicine and a background in clinical practice, teaching and research, Dr. Atkinson brings a unique and important skillset to the role,” said Dr. Édouard Hendriks, Horizon’s vice-president of medical, academic and research affairs, in a statement.
The statement said Atkinson’s vision for his new role is to focus on achieving excellence in patient care through supporting his clinicians and staff and collaborating with colleagues in other specialities.
“Despite the challenges, we must provide the community with the security of knowing that we will be there, delivering the best possible care for them in their worst moments; in their emergency,” said Atkinson in the statement.
Atkinson has held several other leadership roles, including assistant dean of research at Dalhousie Medicine New Brunswick, and chief medical officer at WorkSafeNB.
