The Cherry Brook Zoo in Saint John is closing after nearly 46 years in operation.
In a statement, Norm McFarlane, chair of the zoo’s board of trustees, said they have decided to permanently close.
“The conditions we find ourselves caused by the COVID-19 pandemic have placed the Zoo under severe financial pressures,” said McFarlane. “However, we are still in great need for donations and financial aid to bridge the gap while the animals are still in our care before finding them new homes.”
The zoo’s executive director, Martha McDevitt, said the uncertainties of this pandemic prevent them from executing a new strategic direction for the zoo, to provide a sanctuary and rescue for animals that need a permanent home.
“The Zoo’s strategic plan would have positioned the animals as educational ambassadors to people of all ages on issues such as conservation and animal welfare,” McDevitt said.
McFarlane said they “deeply appreciate” the support and contributions of our sponsors, supporters, the city of Saint John, and the community over the years.
”This is an extremely heartbreaking decision. We know that the community will understand this is out the well-being of our animals. As the wind down plan is developed and put into action, all of the animals will continue to live at the zoo and be cared for to the highest standards demanded of accredited Zoos. The Zoo has been part of the Greater Saint John’s fabric for decades and would have celebrated 46 years this summer,” McDevitt said.
Officials from Cherry Brook Zoo are working with Canada’s Accredited Zoos and Aquariums (CAZA) to ensure that the animals are well cared for and are relocated to suitable future homes.
