Young people in Canada have been impacted by COVID-19 as much as anyone else.
That is the message from Bardish Chagger, the federal Minister of Diversity and Inclusion and Youth.
“My colleagues and I hear from young people from across the country. We recognize that youth are not only students, they are also essential workers, entrepreneurs, parents, caregivers and more,” said Chagger.
Chagger’s comments come as Ottawa announces nearly $9 billion in supports for post-secondary students, mainly through the proposed Canada Emergency Student Benefit.
The program would see eligible students receive $1,200 a month while they are waiting for classes to resume.
She said part of the investment also includes expanding existing supports and programs like the Canada Service Corps.
“This program is designed to connect young people aged 15 to 30 with opportunities to serve. We’re increasing the number of available microgrants from 1,800 to 15,000,” said Chagger.
Chagger said the federal government will also launch a new grant which will provide students to get involved with the crisis up to $5,000 to support post-secondary education costs this fall.
