Saint John is working to roll out more essential services, after changes were made to the province’s emergency management recommendations last week.
As of Monday, the city re-introduced street sweeping, and sidewalk clean-up will soon follow.
The city is now able to roll out line painting, pothole repair, and traffic bylaw enforcement, among other services.
No exact timeframe has been given for when the newly allowed services will be re-introduced.
City Manager John Collin says the roll-out will be closely monitored to ensure it follows current provincial COVID-19 regulations.
“(Services must) respect all the health and safety guidelines, protect our assets, and make sure financially we are well-positioned moving forward,” Collin said.
Mayor Don Darling said at Monday’s council meeting that he’s noticed Saint John residents taking advantage of stay-at-home measures, and contributing to the city’s clean-up efforts.
“A neighbour of mine swept-up and picked up a bunch of debris in an alley-way, Uptown Saint John has done some work as well. Many hands make light work,” the mayorsaid.
Both Darling and Collin went on to encourage residents to ensure they follow health advisories when leaving the home, and to ensure proper physical distancing measures are being followed.
