Canada’s Public Safety Minister gave his condolences to the families and communities affected by the weekend shooting in Central Nova Scotia that killed at least 19 people.
Bill Blair said the people of Canada are grieving along with Nova Scotians. He explained he has asked Members of Parliament for the affected communities how the federal government can support those areas after the tragedy.
“We will continue to work together to get through this. We will continue to support the RCMP in the important and vital work that they are doing to get Canadians the answers that they seek,” Blair noted.
Blair praised the RCMP as they investigate what he calls “incredibly complex, tragic crimes.”
Among the victims are RCMP officer Const. Heidi Stevenson, Lisa McCully, a Debert Elementary Teacher, and Victorian Order of Nurses members Heather O’Brien and Kristen Beaton. Blair said they will be remembered “throughout Canada’s history.”
He added he knows that more details are still to come as RCMP investigate.
“What is known now will be added to. The information will be incomplete. The RCMP are doing an extraordinary job of tracking the evidence, getting the facts, dealing with families who are grieving an incredible loss,” Blair said.
When asked about gun control measures, the Minister said the government continues to explore that legislation, but the focus for now is on supporting grieving communities and families.
