Canada’s Chief Public Health Officer reported Monday afternoon that Canada has 24,804 cases of COVID-19, and 734 people have died as a result of the virus.
Dr. Theresa Tam said that a significant proportion of the cases that have resulted in death have taken place at long-term care facilities.
“Sadly, because COVID-19 can have a prolonged course, these deaths will continue to increase even as the epidemic growth rate slows down,” she said.
Dr. Tam said that Canada has seen some positive trends when it comes to the number of COVID-19 cases, but reiterated it remains important for all Canadians to follow health advisories like physical distancing.
“We know that physical distancing works to reduce the number of people who get infected, and once low enough the epidemic will run out of fuel,” Dr. Tam said.
She cited the decreasing number of day-over-day case numbers as a positive sign.
“One thing is certain: if we want a best-case scenario, we need to give it our best efforts.”
