Medical experts are daily announcing new numbers and percentage with regards to COVID-19 testing, but what do they mean?
That’s what Canada’s top doctor, Theresa Tam, tried to explain on Thursday.
“Canada has been maintaining around a three to four per-cent rate for positive COVID-19 tests which is within a good range for accurate detection,” says Tam, “…if we drop below this, for example to one per-cent, it may mean that we’re casting our net too wide.”
Despite that good news, she adds that the number of COVID-19 cases in high risk settings continues to rise.
“In particular, long-term care facilities are being impacted in high numbers, as well as reports in some hospitals with health care workers impacted. At least 50 deaths are related to long-term care homes, seniors’ residences and other care facilities.”
Tam adds that even though almost 90 per-cent of all hospitalizations due to the virus are those considered high risk, COVID-19 doesn’t discriminate and spares no one.
As the fight against the virus continue, Canada’s Chief Public Health Officer reminds us that it’s all hands on deck.
“We need gamers, YouTubers, TikToks, and Snapchat users to join our effort and spread the word to #StayHome.”
As of this morning, Canada has over 10 thousand confirmed cases of COVID-19, with around 95 per-cent of the over 260 thousand tests coming back as confirmed negative.
