The University of New Brunswick is aiming to help students left in the lurch as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
A statement from the university invites students who have incurred “urgent and immediate financial needs” as a result of the pandemic to apply for the university’s COVID-19 Student Relief Fund.
Bursaries of up to $1,000 will be available to students of the Fredericton and Saint John campuses.
Angelique Simpson, the school’s director of development and donor relations, says the funds should be available soon.
“Financial aid is hoping to start dispersing some money as soon as this week, and they’re working through some of the logistics involved (now),” Simpson said.
With international students from all parts of the world, the fund could be used to help a stranded student pay to get back home, or it could be used in order for students who have suddenly been laid off pay for groceries.
Simpson says the school has seen a significant demand for the bursaries, which were announced last week.
“As of Monday, there are over 1,100 applications in, so the need certainly surpasses our available resources at this point.”
Students looking to apply for the grant can head to UNB’s website, where they can submit an application. Donations to the fund can be made online as well.
