Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is providing more details on the federal government’s new wage subsidy program.
Any company that has lost 30 percent of its revenue during the COVID-19 pandemic is eligible for the federal government’s wage subsidy program.
The program which was announced last week will see the federal government pay up to 75 percent of an employee’s salary regardless of the size of the business they work for.
Trudeau wasn’t beating around the bush addressing the nation’s businesses suggesting they should not abuse the government’s generosity by trying to game the system.
“We are trusting you to do the right thing, if you have the means to pay the remaining 25 percent that’s not covered by the subsidy, please do so. If you think this is a system you can take advantage of, don’t, there will be serious consequences for those who do,” Trudeau said.
Media inquired about whether there would be more support for the energy sector and Trudeau said they will be doing more in the future for those businesses hit hard by the coronavirus crisis.
