The prime minister is warning Canadians about a text scam involving the newly unveiled Canada Emergency Response Benefit.
Justin Trudeau suggests using the government website for accurate information on all COVID-19-related financial benefits.
He was asked why medical equipment was sent to China earlier this year when it’s needed here.
Trudeau responded by saying this is a global crisis that requires cooperation to keep everyone safe.
“At the same time, I can assure everyone the federal stockpiles have been sufficient to meet the needs of the provinces until this point,” Trudeau said.
Trudeau also pointed out millions more pieces of medical equipment are coming soon.
Self-isolating for 14 days is now mandatory for Canadians returning from abroad under the Quarantine Act.
The prime minister said the government is taking greater action on this because too many travellers are not self-isolating when returning home.
“Some people have not been taking this seriously. They are stopping by the grocery store on the way home from the airport. They are getting together with friends after being away for March break. This kind of conduct is not just disappointing, it’s dangerous,” Trudeau said.
Trudeau noted anyone who doesn’t comply with the Quarantine Act could face fines and prison time.
The prime minister also announced Kirsten Hillman has been named the Canadian Ambassador to the United States.
Trudeau says she was “instrumental” during the NAFTA negotiations.
