The International Olympic Committee officially postponed the Tokyo 2020 games to no later than the summer of 2021 this week.
This comes as welcome news to many Canadian athletes, like Sarah Mitton, who has been anxiously awaiting news on her Olympic dream.
“The past few weeks have been very emotional, first with the COC’s decision and the IOC. Ultimately I think it’s the right call,” said Mitton.
The Olympics are meant to show the top athletes from around the world and with the current situation, Mitton feels that would have been compromised.
“With some countries not attending and the disruption to our training it just doesn’t seem like it would be a fair Olympics,” she said.
Tokyo is set to be Mitton’s first Olympics after she qualified earlier this winter and while she thinks her qualification will stand she recognizes that the situation is unprecedented.
With the games pushed back a year, she is hopeful that it will give the IOC and athletes the time they need to adequately prepare for the games.
