Young people are being warned to take COVID-19 seriously.
Canada’s chief public health officer Dr. Theresa Tam says they want young healthy people to understand they can be seriously affected by the virus.
“So that they don’t think it is just an illness that impacts the older generation or the people with underlying issues, all of us potentially could get this illness. You may not know that you are the one that’s going to get sick,” Tam said.
Federal health officials say as the pandemic goes on, around half of the cases caught the virus in their own communities.
Tam explains different areas will focus on testing different groups, depending on how cases crop up.
“Now it’s about 50/50 per cent of travellers versus those who are acquiring it in their community. That is a very big shift, so the lab testing protocols will be adjusted based on the experience of the jurisdictions,” Tam added.
