The prime minister admits Canada may not be able to bring all travellers home amid the coronavirus pandemic.
Justin Trudeau is encouraging Canadians stranded outside the country to register with Global Affairs Canada for assistance and information.
However, airlines are cancelling flights and countries around the world are tightening their borders to stop the spread of the 2019 novel coronavirus.
“Obviously, if they are not certain they’re getting on a flight, they’re probably better to stay in place, but Global Affairs Canada will give recommendations like that on various situations. People will need to use their best judgement,” Trudeau says.
The prime minister adds they are still looking at a broad range of options to contain the coronavirus, although Canada has not declared a state of emergency yet.
He says at this stage, they do not see the Federal Emergencies Act as the “essential tool” to use for for this situation.
“I think the key issue is, are there things that we need to be able to do as a government that we cannot do with the very strong, existing regulations that are in place, and that our government has as tools?” Trudeau explained.
