A lot can happen over the next two weeks to change the direction of the federal election campaign according to a Canadian politics professor.
Mario Levesque from Mount Allison University says the other political parties will be looking to score points on Liberal leader Justin Trudeau.
“Right now Justin Trudeau is really campaigning against himself. He’s looking in the mirror and his biggest critics and what people are going to hold him accountable to is his promises in the last four years and whether or not he’s been able to make progress on them and keep them.”
Levesque says the other parties on the left are doing their best to challenge the Liberals.
He adds the only real party on the right is the Conservatives noting how Maxime Bernier’s People’s Party only appeals to a tiny segment of the population.
He notes how the tide turned quickly in the final days of the last election.
“In 2015, it was with two weeks left that we had the immigration issue for the refugees. The image of that child face down in that water came up and the response from the Conservatives really hurt the Conservative Party,” he notes.
Despite some scandals already, Levesque adds it’s highly possible an even bigger issue has yet to emerge in this campaign.
