Police issued more than 150 tickets and laid several charges during recent traffic enforcement operations in southern New Brunswick.
The RCMP partnered with the Kennebecasis Regional Police Force to conduct traffic operations in the Rothesay area between Sept. 12 and 14.
Additional enforcement operations were done in the areas of Hampton, Sussex, Petitcodiac and Riverview.
Mounties said 36 of the tickets — or nearly 25 per cent — were for not wearing a seatbelt.
“That is disheartening, considering that 19 of the people who died on New Brunswick roads last year weren’t wearing one,” said Sgt. Mario Maillet of the RCMP’s Tactical Traffic Enforcement Unit.
“Seatbelts save lives, it’s that simple — for drivers and passengers alike — and it takes no time to buckle up.”
Police also issued 27 tickets for cellphone violations, the RCMP said.
Nine people were charged for driving while suspended, two were charged for driving while prohibited, and two seven-day roadside suspensions were issued.
Police said 16 vehicles were towed for not being safe on the road, or the driver not being allowed to drive.
