Saint John’s transportation commissioner says the 2019 construction season has gone well so far.
Michael Hugenholtz said they had a bit of a late start as crews were diverted to deal with spring flooding.
But Hugenholtz said they were able to hit the ground running, thanks in part to council approving the capital budgets early.
“When we get early approval of the budgets, we’re able to go out and get everything designed and tendered and awarded earlier so we can hit the ground running as soon as the construction season starts,” said Hugenholtz.
Even though school is back in session, there is still a number of large construction projects going on throughout the city.
Hugenholtz said they are on track to complete nearly 60 lane kilometres of asphalt resurfacing this year.
“The asphalt resurfacing program will probably take the entire season, so we’ll certainly be into September, if not October, on that,” he said.
Crews also need as much time as possible for some of the larger capital projects, Hugenholtz said.
He said you can find the most up-to-date information about construction projects on the city’s website.
“Our GIS team has put together sort of an interactive map that shows the entire city, all the major construction projects are highlighted on there,” Hugenholtz said.
You are able to see the anticipated completion dates for each project and what the overall budget is, he said.
