An elderly woman managed to escape her burning home in east Saint John on Thursday morning.
Fire crews were called to Doyles Lane in Black River Road shortly before 11:30 a.m.
Barry Oickle, a platoon chief with the Saint John Fire Department, said firefighters found smoke coming from the single-storey home when they arrived.
Oickle said the woman had already made it outside and firefighters helped to save her two dogs and one cat.
He said the fire was contained to the back bedroom but there was some smoke and water damage elsewhere, along with some melted siding.
Officials are still investigating what caused the fire.
