A well-known name in the Saint John area has taken on a new role with the city’s police force.
Jim Hennessy has been named the new manager of communications and public information.
He is the first civilian to hold the role, which has usually been filled by police officers.
Hennessy says he knows how important it is for the public to have timely information.
“There’s always tension when people hear about something that might be going on that could affect them or the neighbourhood they live in,” said Hennessy. “The sooner we can get out accurate information and up-to-date information, the easier it is to try to alleviate those fears.”
Hennessy has worked in the communications and journalism sector for more than 25 years, including here at Acadia Broadcasting.
He said he hopes to improve public communication and let officers focus on their policing duties.
“Besides their regular shifts, they’re doing a tremendous amount in the community,” Hennessy said. “The community police officers, the officers that are on duty every day, as you know mental health is a big thing right now, there’s a lot of extra stuff that they’re dealing with.”
Hennessy says he also wants to make people aware of the good things happening within the force.
“Jim has a great passion for serving his community,” said police Chief Bruce Connell. “This along with his background and experience will be a great addition to the force.”
