A fire has destroyed several buildings at a privately-owned sawmill in Penobsquis, northeast of Sussex.
Crews were called to Ayat Timbers International on Portage Vale Road around 4:45 p.m. Saturday.
Firefighters battled high temperatures and strong winds as they worked to put out the flames. At one point, black smoke could be seen about 15 kilometres away in Sussex.
Milburn Rossiter, chief of the Penobsquis Fire Department, said the fire was under control by 8 p.m. Saturday.
Rossiter said two buildings were destroyed, including a kiln mill, which is used to dry timber. Crews were able to save a newer building on the property, he said.
Another fire truck from #Sussex just arrived on scene. A truck from Petitcodiac came in just behind it. Strong winds are blowing smoke and debris quite a distance. pic.twitter.com/cdCfOMNrKn

Fire crews from Sussex, Petitcodiac and Havelock were also on scene, along with the RCMP and Ambulance New Brunswick.
A Department of Energy and Resource Development plane also dropped water on the fire, which had spread into the woods, Rossiter said.
Rossiter said no one was hurt and the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
