The regular season has ended and now the playoffs begin for the Saint John Junior Alpines.
Saint John will face the PEI Islanders in the best-of-five New Brunswick Junior Baseball League semifinal series.
Don Dignam, head coach of the Alpines, said it will be a tough series but he is feeling pretty positive.
“We played some tight games against each other this year and we kind of got the bounces in some of those games so hopefully that keeps up in the playoffs,” said Dignam.
“I think our biggest obstacle is just ourselves. We need to execute and we need to get the fundamentals down like every team does in the playoffs, and the team that is most successful at doing that usually is the team that comes out on top.”
Saint John finished the regular season in second place with 16 wins and eight losses. PEI finished in third with 12 wins and 12 losses.
Dignam said consistency and depth are big things for the team but pitching is their strong suit.
“The Nason brothers — Matthew and Ryan — Dawson Griffin, Greg Mitchell, Nick McDermott, Matt Oram, Connor Huckins, they’ve certainly given us a chance to win every game this year, that’s for sure,” he said.
Games one and two take place Saturday at Memorial Field. Game three is set for Sunday in Charlottetown.
