Two more North Atlantic right whales have been found dead in Canadian waters, bringing this year’s death toll to eight.
Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) said one whale was spotted Thursday during an aerial surveillance flight west of the Magdalen Islands in the Gulf of St. Lawrence.
It was re-located by a vessel Friday. The necropsy will take place in Grand-Étang, Que., on Sunday.
On Friday, officials confirmed another dead right whale sighted off the coast of Glace Bay, N.S.
It was originally reported June 24 but officials were not able to find it then to confirm its identity.
DFO said the cause of death for these whales is not yet known.
