NB Power customers are now paying an extra 2.48 per cent for their electricity.
The Energy and Utilities Board approved the rate hike Thursday — which is also when the increase takes effect.
The utility applied for a range of rate increases earlier this year averaging 2.5 per cent. It requested a 2.9 per cent hike for residents and a 1.7 per cent increase for commercial customers.
But in a decision earlier this week, the EUB ordered NB Power to calculate a uniform increase for all customers.
Saint John Energy says its customers will also see a 2.48 per cent increase as a result of the decision.
“These rate adjustments will enable Saint John Energy to continue providing safe, reliable service for our customers,” said Ray Robinson, president and CEO, in a statement.
Saint John Energy said its residential rates are, on average, 10 per cent lower than elsewhere in the province. The utility’s water heater and heat pump rental rates will remain the same.
