A third dead North Atlantic Right Whale is undergoing a necropsy on a beach at the western tip of Prince Edward Island today.
The Department of Fisheries and Oceans says Comet was a 34-year-old male found off the Acadian Peninsula earlier this week.
DFO spokesperson Isabelle Elliott says a lot of work is involved in a necropsy which is done in partnership with marine mammal partners.
“Immediately after a carcass is sighted, we do make efforts to go out and put satellite tags on them so that we can track the animal until we are able to tow. The towing to date has been done by our coast guard.”
On Thursday, a sixth dead right whale was found in the Gulf of St. Lawrence off the Gaspe Peninsula.
A speed restriction of 10 knots was introduced for larger vessels this week in the western Gulf region where many whales have been recently spotted.
