The Saint John Sea Dogs selected forward Joshua Roy as the first overall pick at the 2019 Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) Entry Draft.
Roy was identified as the top prospect heading into Saturday’s draft, which took place in Quebec City.
The 15-year-old Quebec native led the Quebec Junior Hockey League (LHMAAAQ) with 38 goals and 50 assists in 42 games last season.
“It’s a privilege to pick first overall and we are thrilled to add Josh to our elite young core,โ said Trevor Georgie, president and general manager of the Sea Dogs, in a statement.
“He has incredible offensive ability and will be an important part of our team that will one day compete for our fourth President Cup and second Memorial Cup.”

Roy is the second-ever forward selected by the Sea Dogs with the top pick. In 2015, the Sea Dogs selected Joe Veleno.
Defencemen Alex Grant (2005), Yann Sauve (2006), Simon Despres (2007) and Luke Green (2014) were also selected by Saint John with the first overall pick.

- Jaiden Moriello (12th round, 213th overall)
- William Elias (13th round, 218th overall)
- Carter McCluskey (14th round, 236th overall)

The Sea Dogs also completed a trade during the draft, acquiring overage forward Nicolas Guay from the Drummondville Voltigeurs in exchange for a 3rd round pick in 2020 (Bathurst) and a 3rd round pick in 2021.
“Nicolas is an exceptional young man and a first-class leader,” Georgie said. “He is the exact player we need to lead and mentor our young team and we expect him to continue to build on the success he’s found in the QMJHL so far.”
Guay is coming off a career-high season posting 40 goals and 47 assists while serving as captain for the Voltigeurs. Entering his fifth season in the QMJHL, the Quebec native has played 204 games and scored 174 points.
