The city’s Long Wharf is now home to a number of large wind turbine blades, with more parts to arrive throughout the summer.
The turbine parts are for two different renewable energy projects—one in Elgin and one in Sussex. The parts requires large lay down area during their arrival and transit phases.
The Wharf will be occupied from May 20 into September. There are four shipments of parts coming in during that period, with the first arriving Tuesday.
Two events this summer are going to be impacted by this activity at the Wharf, and have had to find new homes.
The Loyalist City Rib Fest will now take place in June at the Lower Cove Terminal.
Area 506 Music Festival will also have to make the move, taking over the former site of the Coast Guard building on the Fundy Quay this August.
The Coast Guard building is set to be demolished in the coming months, and when taken down will clear almost 200,000 sq. ft. of waterfront space.
Paula Copeland with Port Saint John says both events were given ample notification of the changes.
“We had given Area 506 a heads up back in February that we had opportunity for business there this summer that would impact their event location. We also worked with them to mitigate issues that arose in the move,” she explained in an email.
“We also gave an early notice to Rib Fest and followed up with a confirmation when we knew and worked with them to get a new location.”
Copeland is excited to have work at the terminal, and to have it support the renewable energy sector.
