The truck driver responsible for the Humboldt Broncos bus crash will spend eight years in prison.
Jaskirat Singh Sidhu was handed the sentence in a Saskatchewan courtroom on Friday.
Last April’s crash claimed the lives of 16 people and left 13 others with injuries.
Sidhu previously pleaded guilty to 16 counts of dangerous driving causing death and 13 counts of dangerous driving causing bodily harm.
Once he is released from prison, Sidhu will be banned from operating a motor vehicle in Canada for 10 years.
In her decision, Judge Inez Cardinal said the collision was avoidable and required a strong message of deterrence and denunciation.
But she said Sidhu’s guilty plea and other mitigating factors meant he did not merit the maximum 14-year sentence.
Humboldt Broncos team president Jamie Brockman says the sentencing is a big step in the healing process for everyone involved.
