Saint John has declared a temporary overnight parking ban for the south central peninsula to help with snow removal.
Vehicles left on the street between 11 p.m. Tuesday and 7 a.m. Wednesday will be ticketed and/or towed.
“The purpose of a Parking Ban is to allow plow crews to push snow back from all streets in the South/Central Peninsula to maintain access to all streets — especially narrow ones — by emergency and private vehicles throughout the winter,” said a news release from the city.
Seven city-owned lots will be available to park in at no charge between 6 p.m. and 7 a.m., including:
- Corner of Princess Street and Canterbury Street (entrance on Canterbury Street);
- Corner of Duke and Sydney Street;
- Peters Street;
- Carmarthen Street (Vineyard Church);
- Mecklenburg Street at Wentworth Street;
- Corner of Charlotte Street and Queen Street at Key Industries (entrance on Queen Street); and
- Water Street at Coast Guard (behind Coast Guard building).
“Vehicles remaining in the lots after these times may be towed at the owner’s risk and expense,” said a news release from the city.
The Peel Plaza parking garage is also offering a $5 overnight parking rate between 6 p.m. and 8 a.m.
On Monday night, an overnight parking ban was issued for the north, east and west areas of the city.
Lori Lambert, acting communications officer for the city, said 121 tickets were issued and 30 vehicles were towed.
Because of Tuesday night’s parking ban, crews will be picking up garbage a bit earlier than usual in the south central peninsula.
Residents of the regular Tuesday night pickup schedule are asked to have their garbage and compost collection to the curb by 6 p.m.
