Moosehead Breweries is donating $25,000 to help make an iconic Saskatchewan moose statue the tallest in the world once again.
Moose Jaw’s “Mac the Moose” held the title for decades at almost 10 metres high — until Norway erected a silver moose about 30 centimetres taller in 2015.
Trevor Grant, vice-president of marketing and sales at Moosehead Breweries, said it felt like a no-brainer to get involved.
“There’s the obvious connection with the moose being the icon of our organization and our brewery, and it has been since 1933,” said Grant.
As Canada’s oldest independent brewer, Grant said they understand what it can feel like to be challenged by “the big guys” and they see the same fighting spirit in Mac.
He also noted there are a lot of similarities between Moose Jaw and Saint John, where their brewery is located.
“Really humble people, down to earth, very welcoming, tons of hospitality, and they were just so pleased to have us there and to see that we wanted to step up and help their cause,” Grant said.
Jacki L’Heureux-Mason, executive director of Tourism Moose Jaw, said they will dedicate the money to the upcoming renovation or future rebuilding of their beloved statue.
A GoFundMe page has also raised $12,000 dollars to help Mac “grow” taller than his Norwegian competitor.
