A new approach to eating has been introduced as part of Canada’s new food guide.
Health Minister Ginette Petitpas-Taylor emphasized eating healthy is more than just the food we eat.
The new guide includes dietary guidance and advice on how to eat healthy in this day and age, “It gives clear, concise advice that everyone can easily apply to their everyday lives. Things like cooking more often and eating with others and limiting highly processed foods.”
It focuses on eating fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains and proteins which are more plant-based.
Health Canada is also encouraging water with meals instead of fruit juices.
Petitpas-Taylor says recommended servings and food groups are also missing from the new guide, “It gives Canadians the tools they need to eat healthy. It puts more focus on what, how and when we eat, and less on food groups and servings.”
She adds, “The new Food Guide is an online suite of resources that better meets the needs of different users, including the general public, policy makers and health professionals. This includes mobile-friendly web content to encourage Canadians to eat healthy whenever and wherever they go.”
Health Canada says it is also working to ensure that the revised Food Guide is inclusive of Indigenous Peoples, reflecting social, cultural and historical context.
Canada’s new Food Guide replaces the old “one size fits all” approach with a dynamic tool that reflects the Canada of 2019 and gives clear, concise advice to help all Canadians eat healthier and enjoy doing it!
