Saint John fire crews are investigating the cause of a blaze which damaged a two-storey home on Rothesay Road.
Barry Oickle, platoon chief with the Saint John Fire Department, said they were called to the scene shortly after 7:30 p.m. Saturday.
Oickle told our newsroom the first crews on scene reported smoke showing from the second floor.
“One crew was assigned to search the building and do a systematic search of all floors and the basement,” Oickle said. “They reported an all-clear and found no other occupants in the building.”
#SJFFs responded to a structure fire on Rothesay Road around 8:00 last night and were met with smoke coming from the attic apartment. Crews quickly knocked down a fire in the back bedroom.Sadly,the tenants dog was home at the time and didn’t survive.

Fire officials said the blaze was quickly knocked down and contained to the back bedroom where it started.
Oickle said the tenants of both apartments made it out safely but a dog inside the home did not survive.
“Our fire investigators were called in to determine a cause of the fire, however, the fire is still currently under investigation,” he said.
Fire crews remained on scene for about three hours.
