A 105-year-old covered bridge in Charlotte County has been closed to traffic for over nine months now because of structural issues.
During an inspection of the McGuire Bridge in Elmsville last fall problems were found including signs of rot so it was shut down.
Victoria Maillet of Elmsville tells CHSJ News her 22-minute commute to work has become closer to 45-minutes due to the closure.
“The community is quite upset that we’ve been stuck this long and nothing’s been done about it,” says Maillet — and as for the future of the bridge:
“I think as long as they can save it so it can be seen and pictures taken and keep the heritage, somewhere. I think it makes a lot of people happy knowing they’re not just gonna put it in the landfill.”
The Department of Transportation and Infrastructure says repairs have already started to the covered bridge which will be limited to pedestrian use.
DTI says the aim is to have a new steel bridge installed by the end of the year.
