A dozen really smart UNB students who make the rest of us look like slackers are the newest members of the Sir Howard Douglas society.
A 26 year old business administration student from the Saint John campus is one of the 2018 inductees.
Jordan Michael Tracey is a member of the UNB Board of Governors and the New Brunswick Student Alliance and he tells CHSJ News he is proud of his accolades but he was still a little surprised when this all came about.
“You get involved in one thing and people keep asking you to do stuff. I guess they liked the work I did,” Tracey says, “it’s a privilege to be a part of something like this.”
He spent several years volunteering at Hazen White-St. Francis school as a mentor with the Promise Partnership where he would spend 30 minutes on literacy or math skills.
“For the other half hour, we picked something of interest depending on who the mentee was and basically that ranged from sports in the gym to computer time to breaking out the iPads and playing some games,” Tracey said.
Sir Howard Douglas served as lieutenant governor of New Brunswick from 1823 to 1831 where he promoted education and looked for support for native peoples.
The society was formed in 2006 and currently has 228 members.
