Two Saint John police officers have been awarded gold commendations for their bravery earlier this year.
Sergeant Dave Cowan and Constable Tyler White were given the awards for their quick response and repeated efforts to enter a burning home earlier this year on River Avenue.
Constable White says after several attempts at knocking on the door of the home a man finally answered.
White says they advised the man that the home was on fire and asked if anyone else was inside.
He says the house was fully engulfed in flames and they both knew time was a factor.
Sergeant Cowan says after the man answered the door he went back into the home and in most cases, they would have pulled him back out, but he was the only person who would have had any idea where his family members were.
All four residents, including two young children, were able to get out of the home safely.
Unfortunately, two family pets were lost in the fire.
