A large plume of smoke could be seen for several kilometres because of a fire in Cap-Pele this morning.
Five fire departments including Cap-Pele, Dieppe and Shediac were called in to assist in putting out the flames in three buildings in lower Cap Pele, near Sandy Beach Trailer Park.
Cap-Pele Fire Chief Ronald Cormier says the fire started in one smoke house at Cormier Brothers Fisheries, and then flames spread to another smoke house and the processing plant.
The three buildings have been destroyed.
Cormier says when the winds shifted, that made it even more difficult for firefighters to battle the flames.
He says there were several workers at the plant when the fire broke out, but they all managed to get out safely.
There’s no word yet on what may have caused the fire.
