Weird Origins Of Some Popular Band Names

"Pink Floyd"

Pink Floyd was originally called “The Tea Set,” but changed their name after finding a group of the same name was booked at a show they were scheduled to play. The band decided to change their name to “The Pink Floyd Sound”  but later it shortened to “Pink Floyd” after seeing the names “Pink Anderson” and “Floyd Council” on the notes of a Blind Boy Fuller album.

"Black Sabbath"

Ozzy’s band of mischief didn’t start off nearly as dark as it ended up. The group’s first name was “The Polka Tulk Blues Company,” which was soon shortened to just “Polka Tulk.” After a while, they renamed themselves “Earth,” but had to change their name again when they found out there was another British band with that name.

Then one day, bassist Geezer Butler saw a bunch of people lined up at the theater across the street from their rehearsal room. The movie showing was the Boris Karloff movie Black Sabbath. He noted how much money people spend to see scary films and used the film’s title for a song he wrote inspired by occult writer Dennis Wheatley. This song changed the entire music direction of the band and they started playing much darker songs than other musicians of the time. In 1969, the group decided to change their name to “Black Sabbath” to reflect their new decision to make the musical version of horror movies.

How Do The Billionaires Vacation?

With spring and summer on the way, a lot of us will be deciding what to to and where to go on vacay. Here is a look at some of your options for this

Caribbean Island Rental

When Sir Richard Branson isn’t in residence at his 74 acre private island, you can rent it and bring along 27 of your closest friends. Necker Island in the British Virgin Islands comes with a staff of 60, including general managers, chefs, maids, gardeners and water sports staff. Lie in a hammock, jump on an aqua trampoline, play tennis, rent a Hobie Cat or learn how to kite surf, and stay in the great house with its infinity pool or in one of six private Balinese style houses. The cost is $53,000 per night, or $371,000 for a week.

 India Palace Suite

The Raj Palace in Jaipur, India, a former royal residence, is now part of the Small Luxury Hotels of the World. Its Maharajah’s Pavillion Presidential Suite, a multilevel, 16,000 square-foot space, overlooks gardens and an inner palace courtyard. Guests can access the four bedrooms through a private gold paneled elevator. The third floor has a private rooftop terrace with a view of the city, as well as a Jacuzzi, swimming pool, lounge with home theater and a private spa. The cost is $15,000 per night.

 Hotel Splendor in Dubai

Look, your ship has come in! The Burj Al Arab, a hotel designed to resemble a behemoth sailboat, sits perched on the Dubai skyline. Check into the Royal Suite on the 25th floor, and you’ll have a chauffeur driven Rolls Royce, a floor to ceiling view of the Persian Gulf, a private elevator, private cinema, rotating beds and laptop computers with Internet access. The suite comes with both a pillow menu and a bath menu. The cost is $14,974 per night.

 The Moon

Space Adventures provides the opportunity for you to blast off in a Soyuz spacecraft for a circumlunar mission. During the seven-day space flight, which reaches top speeds of 17,000 mph, you’ll see stars, the illuminated far side of the moon, and the Earth from 250,000 miles away. Candidates must train for four months alongside Russian cosmonauts at the Yuri Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center in Star City, Russia. Two seats are available for $100 million each.

 Silversea World Cruise

Silversea, a luxury cruise line renowned for its gourmet food and service, launched its new Silver Spirit in December. In 2011, this ship will embark on a 119 day world trip from Los Angeles to Southampton, England, exploring 60 destinations in 25 countries. The itinerary includes French Polynesia, New Zealand, Australia, Bali, China, Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, India, Egypt, Italy and Spain. Expect great service: 376 crew will be on hand to tend to the needs of 540 guests. Fares start at $61,924 per person, double occupancy.

Golf Safari

Micatio Safaris gives its clientele the opportunity to go on a 17 day Grand South Africa Golf Safari. It includes an overnight at golf legend Gary Player’s private ranch and a round of golf with him on his private course. Other highlights include a helicopter tour of Cape Town, a visit to South Africa’s wine country, a hot air balloon flight, a visit to Player’s stud farm and a traditional wildlife safari in Phinda Private Nature Reserve. The cost is $1 million for four people, double occupancy.

Maldives Island Rental

Opening this summer, The Regent Maldives is a 50 villa resort that occupies the entire Maalefushi Island in the Indian Ocean. The resort dazzles with over-water accommodations, a lagoon front spa and the only dive center in the atoll. Regent can also arrange for DJs, live bands and chef demos on the beach for private events. Rent the island for $100,000 per day for anywhere from two to 120 guests. That price includes breakfast, dinner, beverages, afternoon tea, spa treatments, water sports and snorkeling.

Private Santana Concert

Marquis Los Cabos in Los Cabos, Mexico, wants you to rock out in style. Its three night Fabulous Cabo package includes arrival by private jet, use of a championship golf course, a tailor made haute couture evening gown, a personal chauffeur, private Carlos Santana concert, private luxury yacht for the day, gourmet dining prepared by a Michelin chef and a private helicopter. Accommodations are in Marquis presidential suite, which has a private butler, maids and a chef. Rates start at $8.4 million for a three night package, which must be booked at least six months in advance.

French Road Trip

Drive a Mercedes, Ferrari, Aston Martin, Lamborghini or another luxury car through the French Alps, stopping at boutique luxury hotels along the way. Loeven Sportwagentouren offers a Tour des Niveaux package with an itinerary from Geneva to Monaco. You’ll see Lake Geneva, Mont Blanc, Nice and more. Rent a luxury car and the cost ranges from $8,126 to $13,544 per person, or bring your own vehicle and the package drops to $7,043 per person. Wine and fuel are extra.

 Trump Tower Chicago

Seeking to impress with a little decadence? The Trump International Hotel & Tower Chicago is offering a Once in a Lifetime proposal package. Pop the question on the 89th floor of Trump Tower amid the ambience of flowers, candles, music and a diamond ring from the Ivanka Trump Jewelry Collection. The cost is $20,100.

Private Jet Trip

National Geographic Expeditions has licensed TCS & Starquest Expeditions to offer an adventure it calls Around the World by Private Jet. Pulitzer Prize winning author David Lamb and photographer Annie Griffiths Belt will accompany the trip in February 2011, while geographer and conservationist David Scott Silverburg and photographer Michael Melford join in October 2011. The 24 day itinerary includes Machu Picchu, Easter Island, Australia’s Great Barrier Reef, Angkor Wat, Tibet, the Taj Mahal, the Serengeti Plain, Luxor and the Pyramids and Marrakech. The cost is $64,950 per person, double occupancy.

Not into Valentine's Day? This Should Help ;)

Here are 4 creative ways to get through the (way too sappy) day!

Gather All The Singles

Just because you don’t have a date on Valentine’s Day doesn’t mean you have to be alone. Make reservations with a group of friends or throw an Anti-Valentine’s Day bash complete with black balloons, beheaded Cupid cutouts, etc. Rent horror movies. This might be the perfect opportunity to revisit “Carrie” or finally watch “Jennifer’s Body”, or have a bad ex name-burning party in front of the fireplace as you eat s’mores.

Bring Food!

Chances are some folks at your office could use a chuckle. Bring in Sour Patch Kids or broken heart-shaped cookies to counteract the bowls of heart-shaped lollipops and conversation candy.

Pin A Furry Friend

Push pins + teddy bear holding a heart = the perfect way to say “I don’t love you.” Put your teddy bear next to your desktop or on your coffee table as a reminder that it is OK that you are not in love.

Hand Out Note Cards

Valentine’s Day fans aren’t the only ones who can pass out cards. Yours don’t have to cost a fortune. All you need is a black sharpy, index cards and a bit of a twisted imagination. Write messages like “Cupid shot me with an arrow and I cut off his wings” and “Happy Sunday.” Give them to friends, or whomever.

Have Fun!

Jay-Z Hands Susan Boyle Some Fashion Advise

Jay-Z thinks that Susan Boyle should start her own clothing line!? WHAT?

Hip-hop mogul Jay-Z said that it would be easy for her to start a clothing company because everyone wants a piece of her right now. "She’ll appeal to women of a certain age. They’ll see an ordinary person who made the best of herself'."

Boyle was also offered an all expenses paid move to a $10 million Malibu home but has turned down the offer.

Sony offered to put the singer up in Los Angeles where she could mix with the A-list but she turned them down because she did not want to leave her cat Pebbles behind and feared the cat would not survive the 11 hour flight if she did take it with her.

Katy Perry Would Ditch Career To Be American Idol Judge

Katy Perry, who recently joined Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson and Kara DioGuardi as a guest judge on the series would consider quitting her pop star life for a permanent role on the TV talent show because she enjoyed how fun and easy it was.

She told MTV, "The American Idol experience was awesome. If I was offered that job as a permanent host, I would ditch my career and take on that career. It’s such a fun, easy thing. I mean, I guess the pressure gets really on when you start eliminating the number of people that are going through until you've got the final two. So that can be kind of tense and stressful, but otherwise it’s kind of like judging a talent show.

Katy had been looking forward to her guest slot for months and went on the program with the aim to be an "honest a*shole" like Simon.

"I might become a little bit of a buddy with Simon, because whenever I watch that show, as much as he's an a*shole, he's a very truthful, honest a*shole."

"I'm not there to build them up. It's weird, because I don't want to break their hearts, but everyone knows someone who's been doing karaoke and doing little gigs here and there, and nobody has told them that they can't sing on pitch for, like, 15 years?

"And you're like, 'Someone needs to say something.' And, unfortunately, I might be that girl.'

Ke$ha Sets Female Download Record

Meet 2010's first new pop star. In one week last month, Ke$ha sold a record 610,000 downloads of the tune TiK ToK. This week, the song logged a fourth week at the top of the U.S. pop singles chart while her CD, Animal, debuted at No. 1 on the U.S. pop album chart. And why not? She's got decent pipes, snotty lyrics about parties and boys, a trashy fashion sense, and a roster of slickly produced cuts that fuse dance-pop, arena-rock, hip-hop and new wave. That $ in her name? Right on the money.

Is Katy Perry Pregnant?

Newly engaged Katy has sparked rumours she is pregnant after being seen looking at baby clothes.

A source told The Sun newspaper: "Russell and Katy had a wander around Hampstead. They visited children’s shoe shop Cubs and had a lot of fun checking out all the little bootees. They then went to Cafe Rouge for a bit of lunch. Katy ordered scrambled eggs and asked for the eggs to be 'well done’. And when Russell asked for a portion of chips she loudly announced to the waiter, 'Hold the mayo’."

Pregnant women are not allowed to eat freshly made mayonnaise because the recipe contains uncooked eggs, which are considered a health risk to unborn babies.

Katy has further fuelled the rumours by posting several cryptic messages on her twitter page.

In a posting on New Year’s Day, she said: "It’s noon on Jan 1st here in the future, let me tell you 2010 is BUMPIN!"

She then wrote to Russell: "I heard ur prego-ed."

She then messaged gossip blogger Perez Hilton, saying: "Boy do I have storrrrries!"

GaGa Leaked!

Fans don't have to wait any longer to listen to the upcoming mini album of Lady GaGa. "The Fame Monster" leaked on Tuesday, November 17, and all the songs from the record, including "Telephone" featuring Beyonce and "Bad Romance", were made available on Rhapsody Blog.

"The Fame Monster" is the repackaged version of GaGa's "The Fame". It will be released in three different versions,

A standard version of the new 8-song album. A deluxe version which includes both "The Fame Monster" and "The Fame", and a collector's edition super deluxe art book version. The standard and deluxe versions will hit stores on November 23, while the collector's edition will come out on December 15.

Talking about her new mini album, the GaGa recently told MTV, "I spent a lot of nights in Eastern Europe, and this album is a pop experimentation with Industrial/Goth beats, 90's dance melodies. An obsession with the lyrical genius of 80's melancholic pop and the runway." GaGa later credited her fans as an inspiration behind the making of the record. "I love my fans so much, and more than anything, I discovered lots of things about myself that I didn't know before through my fans."

Reclaim Your Home, And Make A Beautiful Space, Just For You!

Making Space For You

Too many of us don't wind down during our downtime, if we manage to find any downtime at all. We feel like we're doing the "right" thing only when we're crossing tasks off our to-do list. But that doesn't allow any time to focus on ourselves, which is key to health and happiness. You deserve a place alone to rest, plan, read, dream, journal, or think, to turn off daily stress and just be you — the you you. And creating that haven doesn't have to take a lot of time, money, or even space. Claim a corner in the living room, a nook in the attic, or a spot in the bathroom. Just a peaceful area where you put your chair, your desk, a few of your favorite things. "Spending time there, even 15 minutes, is about experiencing the pleasure that this just-for-you space gives," says designer Rachel Ashwell, author of Shabby Chic Interiors. "Truly appreciate everything you put into your space and the moments you spend there will be your favorite parts of every day."

Serves You Right!

One of my favorite things to do! Brew tea, and a peaceful mood for one, with a teapot and a matching cup.

Creature Comforts

"This space you create for yourself should feel completely safe and deeply comfortable," says Florence Falk, Ph.D., a psychotherapist and author of On My Own. That could mean painting one wall a favorite color or bringing in something nostalgic, like the stuffed animal you've had since you were a kid.

Simply Soothing

The fewer distractions, the better. This isn't the place to cram in everything you love, however a few well edited items help personalize the space. Hang one favorite painting as opposed to an entire collection. Or make your own artwork.

 Day Dreamer

Choose your favorite corner and create a beautiful, comfy nook to curl up in and read or nap. Play with colors (we started with a soothing gray palette and added pops of stimulating yellow and blue) and soft textures by layering throws, pillows, and rugs. Experiment with different items you have around the house until you find the mix that feels right. "You want the space to call to you," says Falk.

 Indulge Your Creative Side

Not everyone longs for a restful spot to zone out when they have time to themselves. You might crave extra moments to paint, scrapbook, write, or dream. Create a space to dream.

Visual Treat

Fill a creative space with beautiful things that inspire you: snapshots, quotes, ads, letters, a small collection you love. No room for a bulletin board? String up a clothesline (tie knots at each end and loop around hooks or nails in the wall), then clip up all of your musings.

 Natural Beauties

Treat yourself — and your nook — to a few fresh stems or one lush bouquet, and include natural elements in the decor. "I collect objects like shells and feathers on vacations to display in my room," says Sue Monk Kidd, author of Traveling with Pomegranates: A Mother-Daughter Story. "Looking at them takes me to a very peacecful, thoughtful place."

Linger In The Tub

"The bathtub is meant to be a loitering space," Monk Kidd says. "And most of us don't give ourselves permission to loiter." Give in. Turn on some calming tunes, add bath oils or salts, and soak up your time alone.

Steven Tyler Leaves Aerosmith?

~HAPPY HALLOWEEN~

Halloween is TOMORRROW, and there you are at home, panicking over what to wear to that last minute party you were invited to. But don’t worry, just check out these five fab costume ideas that take very little time to put together and are bound to get you noticed!

Trinity from The Matrix

Sometimes movie character costumes are difficult to recognize unless they’re characters from cult classics, that is. Not only is Trinity sleek, her outfit is super simple to pull off.

Key items:

Black top
Black skinny pants
Black leather belt
Knee-high boots (worn over pants)
Long black trench coat
Sleek, oval-shaped sunglasses
Fake plastic gun (optional)

Pull your hair back into a sleek, low ponytail (this outfit works especially well if you have naturally dark hair). Now walk with an attitude worthy of Carrie-Anne Moss!

Candy Fairy

This is an original way to dress up, and although it’s not actually a famous character or typical costume, it’s a lot of fun to wear and you’re bound to get some great reactions from people (and maybe a few requests to magically make more candy appear, too).

Key items:
Pastel-coloured dress or outfit
Different kinds of individually wrapped candy

Magic wand

The idea is to pin or glue different types of candy to your outfit, accessories and shoes. For a cute, girlie girl candy fairy look, pull your hair into pigtails with large, 80s style scrunchies and pin lollipops, Rockets, Starburst—or any other kinds of candy—to them. Another option is to use a large headband and stick different kinds of hard candy (unwrapped) to it with a glue gun. Have fun with the look, but the idea is to be as extravagant as possible—it’s Halloween, after all!

Holly Golightly from Breakfast at Tiffany’s

If you’re a total glamazon, then chances are you’ve got exactly what you need to dress up as Audrey Hepburn’s character from this classic film right there in your wardrobe!

Key items:
Little black dress
Fake (or real!) rows of pearls worn closely to the neck
Heavily-jewelled hair accessory or tiara
Long black gloves
Old fashion cigarette-holder

Pull your hair up into a pretty bun on the crown of your head, letting a few locks fall loose at the front (if you have bangs, leave them down). Place a fake tiara, or big barrette with jewels on it at the front of your updo. As for makeup, go heavy on the liquid liner (Halloween is the perfect time to experiment) and create a chic cat’s eye effect by drawing the line slightly upwards on the outer part of your eye.

Meg from The Family Guy
