A member of the Saint John Police Force’s Major Crime Unit was on the stand on Day 14 of Dennis Oland’s second-degree murder trial.
Const. Tony Gilbert said Monday he was told to attend the Far End Corporation office at 52 Canterbury Street on the morning of July 7, 2011, for a deceased person.
Gilbert said after arriving, Const. Duane Squires pointed at an office and said “in there”.
He said he walked in expecting a possible heart attack victim and was struck by a distinct smell and then saw a man’s body on the floor with lots of dried blood.
Cst. Gilbert entered office at Far End Corp office from left side and eventually walked down to area where he found body with a lot of dried blood. He says I walked 10 steps and walked back the same path. 30 seconds in the office

Gilbert said he then realized it was a crime scene and backed out of the office, noting he was not wearing any protective clothing.
Under cross-examination, Gilbert said he would not have entered the unprocessed office if he knew what he was dealing with before he arrived.
The trial continues on Monday afternoon.
