The Maritime Beef Council, representing cattle producers in New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and P-E-I, wants to expand the beef herd in the Maritimes by 20 thousand head over the next ten years.

Nathan Phinney chairs the Maritime Beef Council and he acknowledges the concern there is over climate change but he argues more beef production is a solution because there will be a lot more grassland for carbon sequestration.

Phinney says there's a strong demand for beef and expanding by 20 thousand cattle over a decade is modest but they didn't want to over reach.

He estimates the expansion will cost $70 million with an economic impact of $240 million.
