All’s well that ends well, for a woman driving from PEI to Ontario who lost her dog after a collision on the TransCanada Highway outside Oromocto.
Fire Chief Jody Price says the woman and car were fine, but her dog Sherlock had gotten out and run away from the scene.
“We started looking to see where the dog had gone, and there was moose fence along the road there where the car went off,” says Price. “So the dog followed the moose fence and then went through one of the gates and into the woods towards CFB Gagetown.”
Price says two firefighters tracked Sherlock for four kilometres before losing his tracks.
They were then joined by members of CFB Gagetown’s Range Control, who used their vehicles to find Sherlock’s tracks again.
They finally found Sherlock five kilometres away from the collision, with his leash wrapped around a post.
Price says it’s likely Sherlock would have died if they hadn’t found him because while he was close to the road he was behind a bank and was invisible to any passersby.
Price adds Sherlock would probably have been buried by a plow cleaning off the street, stressing this is an example of how unusual each call can be.
He says overall, this was a very positive ending.
