There is a critical shortage at the moment for all blood types.
Peter MacDonald of Canadian Blood Services says they normally run the national blood inventory at more than 20,000 units which ensures a 6 to 7 day supply of blood products for hospital patients.
He says they are currently running between 12,000 and 14,000 units and some blood groups are less than three days on hand.
MacDonald says in some cities only 3 per cent of the population donate blood. He says all that’s required to change things is making blood donation a priority and giving an hour of your time. He says if everyone that can donate actually did twice a year they would never have to send out messages about a critical shortage in the blood supply.
MacDonald says they do prefer people book in advance but you are welcome to walk in.
