New Brunswick’s covered bridges have made the list of the top 10 Endangered Places in the country.
The National Trust for Canada says the purpose of the list is to shine a national spotlight on historic places that are at risk because of neglect or lack of funding.
The Trust’s website says between natural forces, vandalism, lack of maintenance, and more the covered bridges in this province are increasingly at risk of being damaged beyond repair or demolition. It makes specific mention of the ice this winter and historic flooding we just experienced.
According to the website, only 58 covered bridges remain in New Brunswick which is down from about 340 at their peak in the 1940s.
The covered bridge in Hoyt had to be replaced after a wild weekend of stormy weather in January while Hammond River bridge number 2 was dismantled earlier last year.
