Posted on Saturday, January 19, 2019 07:25 AM

No one was hurt after a piece of equipment caught fire at the Irving Pulp and Paper Mill in west Saint John.

Steve Voutour, platoon chief with the Saint John Fire Department, says the call came in around 3:30 a.m. Saturday.

"The equipment is an external device used to offload chips from railcars into a hopper, and the hopper feeds it onto a conveyor belt," said Voutour.

The fire was put out quickly with the help of crews from the mill, he said.

No word on what caused the fire.

Trudeau Comments On Canadians Detained In China

Posted on Saturday, January 19, 2019 12:26 PM

The detention of two Canadians in China and a third who has seen the death penalty applied to him remains a concern for the prime minister.

It is believed the detentions are an attempt to pressure Canada to release a Huawei executive arrested in December.

But Justin Trudeau says Canada will continue to stand up for the rule of law and the independence of its justice system.

"It would be wrong to interfere politically — certainly because of outside pressures, but for whatever reason — in the independence of our judicial system in Canada," said Trudeau.
