Eighth North Atlantic Right Whale Found Dead In Gulf Of St. Lawrence

Another dead North Atlantic right whale has been found.

The Department of Fisheries and Oceans reported on Twitter yesterday that the carcass was spotted in the Gulf of St. Lawrence.

There is also another entangled whale that was also spotted.

Stark Message Delivered To The City's Finance Committee

The city's assets are not being funded properly and the existing municipal infrastructure needs attention. That message was delivered to the city's Finance Committee with the proposed capital budget for next year that amounts to more than $18 million dollars.

Councillor David Merrithew, who chairs the Finance Committee, says the city will have to change the way it does business because there are no reserve funds for large scale projects which means the cost of borrowing is higher.

Apartment Building Fire In Rothesay

15 people who live in an apartment building on Sierra Avenue in Rothesay were forced from their homes yesterday afternoon after a fire in the building. 

A kitchen fire on the first floor of the building was knocked down quickly by firefighters but caused significant damage to the apartment itself and smoke damage throughout the rest of the building. 

No one was injured and several pets were rescued from the building including one dog which required oxygen.

Coalition Seeks Temporary Moratorium On Development Along Northumberland Coast

A coalition called "Save Wetlands Waters and Tourism" (SWWAT) is stepping up its fight against further development along the Northumberland coast of New Brunswick.

SWWAT member Natasha Bell believes overdevelopment has led to pollution problems at Parlee Beach and Murray Beach but she adds Aboiteau Beach is also becoming a concern.

"We are trying to stop a development - a proposed trailer park with 250 lots - on Crown land at Aboiteau Park which to date hasn't had significant water problems," she notes.

City Police Identify Body Found Under Viaduct As 52-Year-Old Man

City Police have confirmed the body found under the Saint John viaduct earlier this month was that of a 52-year-old man.

Police found the severely decomposed body underneath the viaduct on the north end and it appeared as though the body had been there for some time because they couldn't confirm if it was a man or a woman.

Staff Seargent David Brooker says foul play is not suspected and police are waiting for results from the toxicology report.

 

Dieppe Man Chosen As One Of Two Flag Bearers For Francophonie Games

A 27-year old Dieppe man is one of New Brunswick's flag-bearers at the upcoming Francophonie Games in Africa.

Gabriel Robichaud is an actor, writer and musician who has won several prizes so far, including this year's Le Droit literary prize.

The second flag-bearer is 27-year old Samantha Stewart of Fredericton, who won a silver medal in wrestling at the last Francophonie Games.

The Games are being held from July 21st to the 30th in Cote d'Ivoire.

UPDATE: Sackville Man Charged In Crash That Claimed The Life Of A 19-Year Old Woman

A 27-year old Sackville man is facing charges in relation to a crash that led to the death of a 19-year old woman.

RCMP were called just before 10 Sunday night to a single vehicle crash on Route 106 outside Sackville.

The female driver was rushed to hospital in critical condition, but died yesterday.

A passenger in that car suffered minor injuries.

The investigation determined a second vehicle at the scene was a factor in the crash, and Patrick James Cole is facing a charge of dangerous driving causing death.
